Brown Eyes: A New Musical is a bold reimagining and response to Ragtime the musical that pays homage to Black music throughout the ages. Brown Eyes is a love story wrapped-up in a futuristic sci-fi/thriller set in the year 2070. Sarah, an aspiring DJ, navigates in a dystopian future where Black folks (and other people of colour) mysteriously go missing. She just might find an escape with the help of her lover, J-Dub, a music producer. This fresh take explores themes of identity politics, class warfare, and Black resilience. We bring new depth and perspective to a popular story through an original score of Hip-Hop, Trap, R&B, DJing and a splash of Ragtime music of course!

About the show

There is surveillance EVERYWHERE. It's not uncommon for the government to put secret cameras on streets or just outside your window. People still wake up to check their phones. And all the news that gets reported seems strangely positive. Like it frames the government as always being in the right... leaves out the sad world events. The citizens eat breakfast and it's almost like deja vu, everyday is the same and it's so freakin' BORING. All the other countries have put a trade embargo on us, so no imported spices or foods. (Sidebar: Just think about this the next time you're enjoying fruit, read the label to see where it comes from. It's WILD if you imagine a world where that was no longer an option!)

Everyone carries around the weight of this, especially those who lived before the "The Great Coup de tat". Before the “Great Coup” we had countries known as Canada and the US and Mexico. Now it’s all one unified right-wing land mass. People hide behind a veneer of contentment but are in fact miserable, trapped. No one can admit this, because dissenters always "disappear". Their cell phones are how the government keeps tabs on them, you have to have it...OR ELSE. So in 2070 everyone is still glued to their phone, but this is a warped re-imagining of that

Citizens dress in a uniform of gray scale that is modest. Everyone wears a wig to make hair appear uniform too. A brown crew cut for men, and a brown bob for women. The conservatives don't like rabble rousing, no provocative or flashy clothing. The exceptions are (a) special events like The Poverty Ball (b) celebrities who get to do whatever they want [because that will NEVER change]. Everyone speaks in this weird way--polite, detached, unspecific, (people avoid saying any physical descriptions, politics, religion, sexual orientation, race, etc.) So imagine if political correctness was enforced LEGALLY. People speak in a way that's almost military-like, using last names. "Hello Citizen Daniels." "Evening, Citizen Carter."

The ultimate goal of a citizen (who is white) is the same as it's always been: make enough money to own a private residence. It's rare to be able to do this, most have to rent very tiny, almost unlivable dormitory style housing, like living in a bee hive. But the wealthy have PRIVACY!!! That's the new definition of luxury. Peace, quiet, safety and a safe haven to escape the madness of outside. The ultimate goal of a citizen (who is black or POC) is to STAY ALIVE. They all know that the mysterious disappearances are targeting them. And they also know that once someone goes, they are gone forever. To quote one of my fave musicals, “There is no Urinetown, we just kill people

Saccha Dennis

Saccha Dennis is an award-nominated actor, director, creator, and educator. With over two decades of experience in musical theatre, her performance credits span prestigious institutions such as the Shaw Festival, National Tours, and the inaugural Canadian company of Come From Away.

Her directing credits include Rooted: A Musical Poem (Fringe 2024), Jesus Christ Superstar (TIFT), Bittergirl: The Musical (Thousand Islands Playhouse), Pippin: Reimagined (Theatre Sheridan), Into the Woods (Grand Theatre), We Will Rock You (Theatre Under the Stars), Legally Blonde (Hart House Theatre—Subscriber’s Choice Award for Best Production), 9 to 5: The Musical, and Dreamgirls (LOT—BroadwayWorld Regional Award for Best Production). Known for challenging “traditional” theatre, her latest work includes a Black Panther Party-inspired production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

Beyond the stage, she has made a significant impact in digital storytelling. Through her platform Musicals Reimagined, she explores innovative ways to reframe classic works. Her directorial projects include three award-nominated short films: Hair: A Musical Short, Gethsemane: Black Jesus (both nominated at IBDFF), and Cell Block Tango: Reimagined with EveryBODY Onstage, which won a Webby Award in 2022.

Alicia Richardson is an actor-writer who hails from Boynton Beach, Florida. She came to Canada for the affordable tuition, then she got health care and figured…why fight it? In 2013, she graduated from York University’s MFA Acting & Diploma of Voice Teaching Programs. Now a Permanent Resident, she’s livin’ that sweet (but sometimes sour) artist’s life in Toronto. Her body of work spans theatre, television, film, and voice-over. As playwright, her credits include ArticulationSolve for XSweeter (nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play: Theatre for Young Audiences Division, 2024), and Brown Eyes: a New Musical. Alicia has developed works through artistic residencies with Obsidian Theatre Company, Driftwood Theatre Group, Young People’s Theatre, Cahoots Theatre Company, and b current Performing Arts Company. Follow her tasty, multihyphenate adventures on social @leesheelovesyou

Help Brown Eyes Get to PACT Con 2026 — Whitehorse, Yukon

Brown Eyes: A New Musical is a bold, futuristic, Black-led story set in the year 2070. Blending Hip-Hop, Trap, R&B, and Ragtime, it explores surveillance culture, identity, class warfare, and Black resilience — all within a love story.

This musical was born in Canada, and we believe it should be developed, supported, and championed here first.

From April 21–25, 2026, our team has the opportunity to attend PACT Con in Whitehorse, Canada’s national gathering of theatre companies, producers, and artistic leaders. It’s where partnerships are built and where new work finds the people who can help move it forward.

Being in that room matters.

When Black-led Canadian musicals enter national spaces, it expands what Canadian theatre can look and sound like.

PACT Con is an opportunity to share Brown Eyes with the leaders who help shape the future of theatre in this country.
